Through education-focused programming and community-centered celebrations, we work to preserve history while inspiring unity, understanding, and progress for future generations.
Overview of Juneteenth
Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19th, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce the end of the Civil War, freeing the last large population of enslaved people. Today, Juneteenth is celebrated nationwide, honoring African American freedom and achievement. It also serves as a time to reflect on African American history, cultural exhibits, and the progress made since emancipation.
