In 2023, Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church hosted a powerful event focused on Heather McGee’s book, The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together. This gathering united the community to explore racism’s systemic costs and the actions we can take to foster unity.
The seminar included a dynamic discussion of McGee’s insights into how the American economy often fails the public. As the Chicago Tribune notes, the book has the potential to transform cultural conversations. It highlights the hidden costs of division and the benefits of coming together.
Attendees received free copies of the book and enjoyed dinner from Smokin Wings & Things at Westgate Mall. The event encouraged families to engage in meaningful conversations about societal divides and the shared path to prosperity.
This event served as a reminder of the need to confront inequality and unite for a stronger community.
BEC Gala

The 2023 Spartanburg Juneteenth BEC Gala was a night of elegance, energy, and empowerment. The evening began with a red-carpet experience at 5:00 PM, setting the tone for a night of celebration. At 6:30 PM, the main gala kicked off with live performances, an exciting lip sync contest, and award presentations.
Seven small businesses received critical funding to help them grow. Meanwhile, five non-profits competed in a spirited lip-sync contest. The winner earned an $800 grant.
Later, at 8:30 PM, the Gala Party began. DJ Kurious George kept the crowd dancing as guests enjoyed music, refreshments, and fellowship. It was the perfect setting to connect with fellow community members, awardees, and performers.
Looking back, the BEC Gala celebrated unity, resilience, and the essential role of small businesses and non-profits in Spartanburg’s growth.

In 2023, the Juneteenth celebration fostered deep community spirit. People of all ages and backgrounds joined in diverse, engaging activities. Volunteer-driven initiatives brought residents and organizations together to create a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere.
